water getting into hard luggage
« on: October 21, 2021, 18:49:22 »
I am a new member to the group. I have a 2014 DL650 with Suzuki hard panniers. I have just done a long trip to Scotland and as you will understand we had a lot of the wet stuff. on arrival there was about 2 cup full of water in both panniers.
Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks Gedrick
Many thanks Gedrick

Welcome.

Don’t go to Scotland.

Leaking luggage can be a pain to diagnose.
The easiest solution is to wrap your contents in waterproof liners/roll bags.

While not a solution for diagnosing the pannier leak, you could consider drilling a small drain hole at the lowest point of the panniers. This should allow for the drainage of any collected water, in the pannier box, as well as making use of plastic garbage bag or similar to keep things inside the pannier dry.  Have you had a look at the thread https://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=34126.0 ?

It depends which Suzuki hard luggage you speak of.

The plastic stuff was rebadged Hepco and Becker and was fairly waterproof.
The Metal stuff was made by Trax (SW Motech) and not meant to be waterproof and Suzuki sold over priced (again rebadged) SW motech inner dry bags.

I had the same problem with the Touratech Zega panniers I had fitted to my 1150GS.  In the end I started putting all my gear in Tesco "bags for life" and all was well.  They are waterproof and very cheap.

Oddly, the leak packed up about the same time!
