Givi Outback Trekker Panniers - anyone using?
« on: February 08, 2022, 10:43:50 »
I’m seriously considering throwover soft panniers, but I’m also considering the Givi Trekker Outbacks. Anyone using these? How waterproof are they? Do they last well? Worth the extra expense?

I have the Trekkers (not Outback), they have been from bike to bike over a number of years, always waterproof and solid catches.

The aluminium Trekker Outbacks are quite heavy. I had a pair, bulletproof construction, very waterproof. But bear the weight in mind.

I had some Shad 35l panniers which made my 2009 V-Strom wider than a Goldwing.
So I got a pair of plastic 30l throw over panniers off Ebay and pannier rails from Cosmo.
The high exhaust pipe had me fashioning a heatshield. It might not melt the bags - but to be on the safe side..
Enduristan have a good reputation and are reasonably priced. I'm well pleased with my Wild Heart panniers, unused off Ebay for £85.

I have the largest Trekker Outback top box and have used it for a few years now. The panniers are similar construction. As mentioned, they are very solidly built. I have never heard of any leakage issues with the range. I can’t see the logic of soft luggage unless you are going offroad. Solid is so much more user friendly. Yes, they are heavier but they are also more secure from a theft perspective as well as being easier to fit and remove with no worries about attaching them with straps etc.

Its six of one and half a dozen of the other, isn't it..? Soft vs hard. I like the idea of hard cases and being able to open the top, chuck stuff in or grab something with ease, easy to organise your gear and also distibute weight - camping gear one side, personal gear on the other - plus the bonus of extra security. But then there's the option of soft luggage, which is cheaper (to a point) and if the bike falls over, then at least the panniers won't crumple or get a nasty dent. Also, some of them seem to have a slimmer profile - like the enduristan.

I'm kind of keen on hard open-lid panniers and all the benefits they have, and I do like the style of the trekkers but sometimes I think the soft would be maybe a better alternative.

I personally use the givi trekker outback 58 litre box, it's been fitted to several of my bikes, great piece of kit.
My panniers are 30 litre kriega soft bags, they fit in seconds to my pannier rails and releasing them is even quicker.
They are light weight and can also be carried as a ruck sack ..
