Top Box
« on: June 26, 2021, 08:11:40 »
I'm just purchasing a 2021 - 650 and fancy a Shad SH40 top box but they mount straight on the OEM rack and specify 3kg max ? my waterproof jacket weighs more than that :)  I've previously always gone Givi and theirs has an extra mounting strut support giving more strength, My question is in the "real world" - how much weight can the OEM rack take. What have you carried on the OEM rack ?

I suspect that's a rating for the top box adaptor fixings rather than the rack, which has its own rating which is maybe listed in the owners manual (can't recall exactly, but sure I've seen a rating for it somewhere - 10Kg maybe). I fitted an SW-Motech adaptor plate with Givi mountings to my 1050XT and that's only rated at 3 or 5Kg, from memory, whereas Givi's own plate is rated higher.

My DL1000 has the OEM plate for the Suzuki panier brabrackets and a Givi top box. I have loaded up the top box with 18kg! on a few occasions and havent had any issues with anything.

My feelings precisely - on other bikes I have well overloaded the top box with no ill effects so I think I will take a chance - after all I can always beef up the plate if needed. Thank you.

One thing to point out is that the original shape stroms and L2-L6 650's have metal rear racks.
The later bikes in both 650cc and 1000cc have plastic racks and won't support the weight the earlier bikes will. I have seen some with cracks.

You are able to purchase a brace / support bracket for the rear shelf from GiVi / Kappa, to allow for carrying more weight or when installing a bulky top box. This support bracket is intended to help prevent the non metal top box rack from breakage. Not sure of the product model numbers. Try friend Google.

I feel that the rack is weak, but I have never broken it though. Givi and others add a suspention to the rack in order to support it better.

When you mention Shad... which I also have. The bolts coming with the box are very weak. I broke two out of four on my Euro trip last year.

Thank you all, I guess you are referring to Givi SR3112 which is the support - so I s'pose I could fit that, then mount the Shad to it with stronger and maybe extra bolts  :) or just go back to a Givi box.

The thing is I am looking at an SH40 which has a lovely Blue colour option for the lid, which would look nice and they are generally cheaper to purchase. Bike comes next week so I will look at it again then  :)

I also fell in love with the Shads after being in Barcelona several times (they are EVERYWHERE there). And they tend to look nice on the vstroms.

After I got the 1050, the shad tankbag did not fit, and I bought a Givi - much better quality and functionality.

One thing is for sure... the Shad bolts are crap - buy high tension similars and toss the one that comes with the Shads.

I don't know if it is possible to fit the Givi support if you mount a Shad set... let me know if it is. Then I will also get
