'19 Wee L9 switchable ABS install
« on: June 09, 2021, 19:11:56 »
Hi all, just a quick request for some help and directions please.  :)
I'm planning on making my wees ABS switchable on the fly, as I do the odd bit of gentle off road riding, and nearly lost out to a gate post recently when the ABS tried to cut in on a slippy descent, seemingly had a brain fart, and the bike actually sped up not slowed down....
...anyway...

I'm sure somemultipeoples have covered the subject of installing switchable ABS on the wee before, but I'm struggling to find a post on the forum that's relevant to my L9. So if someone can please save me a nights scrolling and share a link or links here to a post or vid, ideally with some straightforward destructions I'd be grateful, thanks in advance.

... So far the best thing I've found is Andy Strapz's seemingly simple enough fix
 -ABS discussed from 4:00-
 here:

but unfortunately he doesn't state the type of relay he used, - simply switching the blue and red cable with no relay results in the ABS dash light staying on constantly- trying a powered relay is my next step but I'm unsure exactly what to buy and don't want to buy the wrong relay if poss.

Any and all help and advice as ever will be greatly appreciated, and gratefully received🙏
Thanks all.  :auto-dirtbike:

My previous bike was a BMW f700gs. it had a switch to turn off the ABS.
I had it off most of the time. Bloody hate ABS. I want to control the brakes not electronic sensors controlling it for me.
Can't you just pull the fuse?

Colin, what did it do that you hated so much, how often and under what conditions?

My BMW has switchable ABS but the warning light remains on to let you know the ABS is off which I prefer.

If you go off road occasionally the cheapest solution is to just pull the fuse or, you could wire in an easy access switch from the fusebox but in my opinion, fitting a relay to turn the warning light out could lead to trouble if you are forgetful.

@colin ..

I know what you mean, I'm not sure if it's just BMW but I find my GS's ABS a bit intrusive which takes me by surprise at times even on the sunniest dry days.

I'm not against ABS per se, it's saved my blushes on two memorable occasions in heavy rain, once when braking sharply on a white line, and another time when I hit a wet, greasy level crossing a touch too quick, while on the lean. I'm not afraid to say that on that occasion I'd have been down the road without it, as I grabbed a handful.
It's just in certain circumstances off-road it'd be well handy to just flick a switch and turn it off when required, instead of pulling over, lifting the seat off, and removing a micro blade fuse that invariably then pings off into a puddle or a pile of mud never to be seen again.
I think the relay solution Andy Sparx used will probably do the trick. I guess I'd better get up to speed on which type of relays do what and why then get one ordered eh.

If pulling the fuse is a viable option to use in the circumstances, although as you say a bit awkward, why can't you break into the wiring close to the fuse and put an on/off switch in the circuit. You could have the switch in an accessible place ready for use?

Yeah that's Andy Strapz' solution as shown in the vid I shared above thanks though Barbel Mick.
I've already traced the blue and red wire that comes out of the back of the ABS motor fuse holder to an accessible spot behind the battery  and snipped it there. Then spliced and run two cables up to an illuminated, waterproof on/off switch on the handlebars. But now the ABS light is on constantly whether the switch is on or off.
I'm assuming there's some kind of resistance sensor or something in the abs circuit that's now registering a fault. Hopefully installing the correct relay behind the battery, and then running the new cables to the handlebar switch from that will sort it.

I did a bit of online research into relays last night -I didn't realise how inexpensive they are before- and I have ordered two types for delivery today, so hopefully one of those will sort the issue.
Once I've got it properly sussed I'll post the exact procedure, and share some links to the parts required, for anybody else who might be interested 👍

I think the fuse option would be safer. Modifying the ABS system will definitely invalidate insurance if you don't declare the modification.
(This is different to a manufacturer's switchable ABS as it's designed that way and I'm sure most reset when the ignition is turned off)

I'll be surprised if they are happy with amateur modifications to safety electronics: at the least I'd expect that the work has to be done by a specialist. Depends on the company & their level of aversion to risk.
My 990 has switchable ABS but does show the fact it is off and defaults back on when the bike turns on again. Can't say I've felt it to be intrusive enough as disable it: maybe KTM set it up a bit better knowing more of the 990s venture away from cafes?
