If it was me I'd be thinking of drilling a hole from underneath that can be fixed with a glued on plastic patch. Got to be better than wrecking a seat.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

The issue with that may be the battery. There's  a nice drillable plastic tray behind the cross piece where the lock sits, but you need access from the other side which is where the volts reside. If you go in through the storage area with the seat on, you can't get to the mechanism.

All the marked part is accessible from under the rear mudguard if drilling has to be done, but it would have to be clear in the tray (not holding the tool kit as mine is) to gain access to the cable or release lever.
That could be repaired easily enough I would think??
However I still think that if the yellow part is out of its fixing the wire above the panel by the rear grab rail is a good option.  :thumb:

I stand corrected. It's been a while since I delved. Apologies.

Good evening chaps,
after spending another two hours in the garage I finally solved the locked seat problem. I had a friend help me by pulling upwards on the seat really hard (the plastic is quite flexible so nothing broke) so I could get to the locking mechanism. I ended up using a wire cloth hanger similar to Barbel Mick's pic to manipulate the position of the tube and then pliers to pull on the tube which finally worked.

I also solved the mystery of the faulty locking mechanism. Turns out some absolute donkey installed the other end of the wire the wrong way which robbed the mechanism of about 1 cm of wire which explains why the teeth didn't come out far enough. In the picture you can see the correct way it is supposed to be; I drew the way the wire was installed before in red.

About the wobble: Now that the lock is working properly, the seat is a lot less wobbly overall. In fact, I think I will try removing more spacer rectangles because I'd like my feet to be able to touch the ground a little more firmly. Has anyone got experience with doing this?

Glad you got it sorted without any major outlay. Second hand vehicles can be an amusing glimpse into past stupidities at times.

I removed the four oblong ones, didn't like it, so I cut them in half but didn't like that either, the seat still moved about, I had to buy 4 new blocks!!  :smirk:
That was 7 years ago, not long after I got the bike. After a month or so I was used to the amount my feet were touching down.

PS I'm no giant, got a 29" inside leg.
