17" front wheel on a 2015 strom.
« on: June 30, 2020, 18:36:13 »
Has anyone fitted a 17" front wheel to a 2015 v/strom? Which model Suzuki wheel is the best to use?
What are the problems could I expect to encounter? Any thoughts welcome.

I don't think there is anything that's a straight swap.
You'd have to look at bearing/spindle sizes , hub width, rotor size and spacer sizes.

I'm sure if it had been done before there'd be info about it.

When I owned a DL1000 I'd looked at doing the same but the only real way was to change the whole front end buy using SV1000 yokes , fork legs and custom made stanchions.

Good luck if you give it a go .. 👍

I actually have a full sv1000 front end from when I fitted a gsxr k6 front end to the sv. I have looked at doing that but thought going down the wheel only route would be easier to do. I have a lathe so making spacers isn't a problem, its just which wheel to use  sv, bandit or gsxr.

It's not just the spacers, it's the spindle and bearing sizes that will make it a headache. Then there's the rotor's, their mounting points etc.

If you are in a similar league as Alan millyard then it'll be a breeze to machine something up .

If you already have an SV 1000 complete front end I'd look at getting some custom stanchions made up then it's a simple swap .

My biggest problem with using the sv front end is the fitting of the ABS pickup and the fitting of the ABS ring. also getting the ignition switch to fit the sv top yoke.

From StromTroopers https://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,6714.0.html I haven't read the whole thread and it's the early one. I did a 17" conversion on my Cagiva Navigator using CBR 600 wheels, it was the Mother and Father of all faffing but well worth it.

To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

A very easy way to do it would be to convert to wire spoked wheels from the XT. Dismantle the front wheel and fit a 17" rim with new spokes to the hub. Or have a pair made with 17" front and rear.

Costly but do-able, or I'd look at a pair off a GSXR, Bandit, Gladius etc.
