Brake pedal height mods
« on: April 26, 2020, 17:48:56 »
My 2012 650 engine cases were starting to corrode. I've treated them with ACF50 and decided to fit some R&G engine covers ( If you can't see the problem, it's not there right?  ) R&G make a stator cover for my model, but no clutch cover for my model. I bought the SV650 clutch cover with the expectations of modifying it. It turns out, with the exceptions of the cover standing off from the bolt holes ( I bought some M6x60mm bolts on ebay and some M6x10mm nylon spacers) it fits perfectly fine. But as expected, the brake pedal is no longer able to fit in to the recess of the bikes engine cover, So now it sits about 10mm too low for my liking. Does anyone know of any mods that could raise the pedals height?

Surely that would make it worse? It's too low now as it is.

Maybe not. I have Rick's footpeg lowering kit. It lowers everything, footpeg and the brake pedal which will give more then enough room to adjust the hight. The same on the other side of the bike.

From what I've read you've lowered the brake pedal so it doesn't hit your new cover ..?

Maybe the best solution is to remove the brake pedal, heat it up and adjust it so you can raise pedal. In this case outwards so the brake pedal can be raised to it's original height.

Be careful though, its aluminium, make sure it's  real hot and manipulate it slowly.

Cymarc footpeg lowering kit is my suggestion. I fitted these and it made the bike so much more comfortable. As the stated problem is the relative height of the footpeg and the brake pedal I am sure the lowering kit will fix the problem for you.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

The footpeg lowering kits are good but if you have large feet do be careful that your toes will be nearer to the floor when cornering.  The first time your toe touches down mid corner has your heart in your mouth, especially if it's one of those knobbly manhole covers you hit!

Might be worth ordering the optional underwear support kit then...

Why not reduce the spacer size

The spacers aren't there to create a gap, but to fill it. The holes in the engine case are more recessed  on the DL than they are on the SV (Which the R&G case cover is designed for). Without the spacers, you would be pulling the R&G Cover closer to the engine case, but wouldn't be pinching the engine case and engine closed. I'm looking in to the foot peg lowering kit. Ideally I wouldn't want to lower them as I do green laning. However! looking at the lowering kits, I noticed there is a plate that goes between the bike frame and the newly lowered foot peg. I'm wondering if just the blank plate and longer bolts would move the foot pegs out enough to allow me to raise the brake pedal some more.

My second option is to drill and bolt something to the foot pedal itself. BMW *Washes mouth out with soap* have a multi level attachment that you can bolt to their foot pedal. I'm not opposed to the idea, if anyone knows of it being done before, links or advice would be appreciated.

A simple spacer would be an easy fix to move the whole foot peg assembly out slightly, a bit of ally or steel with just two holes and easily reversible at a later date.
