Do you think the valves have already been done?
« on: December 11, 2019, 21:57:44 »
Wondering if the valve clearance has already been done recently on my new-to-me 07 650. There's a stamp in the dealer service book with a list of things done written on it, and one of those is "top end". It was done in 2013 at 6600 miles; it's now at 15400. Anyone else know if top end could mean anything else?

The valve clearances shouldn't have needed adjusting at that mileage unless the old owner had it done for his own peace of mind

At your current mileage I would worry either but again you could have checked for your own piece of mind .

I bought an 18k miles 07 1000 this year with no service history, I thought I'd better check the valve clearances even though people on here say they won't need doing - all were either on the minimum clearance or below and I re-shimmed all eight valves.

First 6K service isn't a valve clearance, next one after is. Unless it's been habitually thrashed you can go much longer between the valve checks. Does it start quickly\tick over evenly\ accelerate smoothly\ give good mpg? If all these are still good you'll be fine with an oil & filters change. Maybe have the valves checked at the next 2xxxx service.
In my defence, she did leave me unsupervised.

Suzuki and every other bike maker state service intervals for a reason. You have choices: do it yourself, get someone else to do it or listen to internet advice and ignore service intervals. My FJR1300 needed 5 shims replaced at first valve service (24k) and none at 48k. My 2016 Veek also had 5 out of spec shims at 15k service.  Your bike, your choice.

I don’t think for a minute that the dealer would have checked the tappet clearances at that mileage, even if they said they have.Checked my 650K9 at 37,000 mls. and all were in spec.

"Top end" is rather vague. There shouldn't have been anything routine at that mileage. And a non-routine job should really have more of a description. Shame it was 2013, no chance to find out from dealer records now. But, as has been said, current mileage says there shouldn't be any issues. And at least now you know for definite. Ready for warmer drier weather.  :thumb:

You have paid the price for "Peace of Mind". A great comfort when you're far from home.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

Could 'Top End' have related to the recall?
Anyway, good to hear the valves are in spec. I need to have mine checked again as they were last checked around 22,000 miles ago and whilst in spec had closed over a bit. I keep meaning to do it myself though never seem to have the time, so it might end up going to the dealers for it again... then again, I would like to do it myself  :fix:

My 650 '04' had apparently had a valve check at 15k, think I bought 7 years ago with 21k . Changed 3 shims at 36k, the bike would fire up first time, but would stall on pull away a couple times was what I noticed first, after shims done all runs smooth.

Great links Gert (as ever). Still looks moderately terrifying compared to easy access screw and lock-nuts I'm used to

Good job for this time of year (over here anyway), must crack on with that one soon too.
