Another test ride on a DL1000
« on: June 03, 2019, 13:00:29 »
Howdo
Still on my quest for a used DL1000
Took a desert version out today , colour is not my ideal choice but liked all the extras
Bike is a 2014 model on a 2015 plate with 19k miles
One owner but no service history , dealer will do a Full Service as part of the deal
Bike road well however noticed from idle when pull in clucth lever a knocking noise goes , is this normal or idle hammer , if so a problem or not ? Also clocks are slightly loose again ( both used one's I have ridden have been the same ) but new one had no movement in clocks ( again is this normal ?)
Priced @ 6k from dealer
Cheers Steve

They all make noises clutch out/in. The Idle hammer is a deep thunk/clank sound but it wouldn't put me off purchase on any Suzuki V-twin unless it was super bad. My SV1000  hammers like a blacksmith and did when I got it 50K+ miles ago so I know the sound well. Its actually not an issue but there are dampers for it. John Sharealike did one as I recall, werks another.

Interestingly no noticeable Idle hammer on my 17 1K strom and I'm 3 oil changes in 10Kmi.  I'm guessing the Mahussive flywheel (vs SV) on these gen 2 DL1K  are better at balancing the loads - maybe it'll appear with more mileage - it wouldn't bother me to be honest.

The spanners here will give more accurate description I'm sure, but I recall reading something about the crank 'jumping' or similar during part of the cycle with thin oil and hot.

If it has two wheels.. I'll ride it.

No idle hammer in mine at 27k but the  clutch makes  a racket in or out. I also  have the clutch vibration from 2000 to 3200rpm which can make the clocks shake about and the handlebar ends. Maybe  this is what you've  been  feeling.
It is annoying but not enough yet for me to spend money!
I have no service history either but apart from oil and filter, one air  filter and set of plugs it's not needed anything as yet.
I'd  not pay 6k thou, I only get offered 4k trade in on mine, if they even want it, try 5k or there abouts, high mileage ones are not popular!
