Houston I have a problem
« on: May 30, 2019, 23:48:53 »
I had some new tyres put on 12 month ago,( v strom 1000 2014 ) after three months I kept losing  pressure in the front checked it to find it leaking around the rim, I went back to the tyre fitter and he took the tyre off the wheel to find bad corrosion, he cleaned it up and painted some stuff on and said it would be OK, six month later it’s pi$$ing out around the rim, my question is could I get it powder coated or is it a new wheel ? I think he must have scraped it on removal and fitting and used fairy liquid solution which has salt in it to help with the fitting.

I've powdercoated the wheels on both of my Guzzis: better long term solution, but I think you could do with a better fitter...

Did you see the extent of the corrosion? Its unusual on a Suzuki rim of that age.
I would take it somewhere else and get them to remove and inspect the tyre and check that it has no damage around the bead.
If the tyre is OK and the wheel is infact corroded to the extent it won't hold air then powder coating would be my choice. I would do both wheels a nice colour and don't forget to factor in new wheel bearings.

Absolutely! Its probable that he fecked up the original tyre change. How many miles had you done with no problems prior to that, I wonder?

What tyres?

I've used Heidenau K60 scouts on a few of my bikes and they always have a bead leak.
The sealing surface isn't great on some tyres.
I've since put on Mitas e-07 Dakars and they sealed fine on the same rim with not cleaning or painting.

But I'd also say it may be the fitter.

Puncturesafe stuff does also eat away at the inside of the rim, even the stuff that says it won't.

If the fitter had buggered your wheel you would have had a flat tyre that day or the next morning.

If a tyre machine and proper levers were used there is no way you can damage the surface the tyre seals against.

I'm going for corrosion .

I had a similar problem with the alloy front wheel of my ancient Honda. I was advised to clean up the corrosion and use rattle-can lacquer on the rim. Over 3 years later it's still air-tight.

you are defiantly going to have to check the seal condition on the rim and the tyre to see if there any bits stuck on or missing from the tyre seal edge

All good and competent tyre fitters should check the sealing areas especially on alloy rims and clean up or make good any places where poor sealing is likely to occur. Using water based tyre fitting lube invariably makes things worse. If it's happening on a relatively new bike it may point to poor or inadequate paint finishing during manufacture. If corrosion is a problem then properly cleaning it off then using a proper metal etching primer before final painting should help as well.

I’m having the wheel powder coated and the spot light brackets as they’ve been rusting since day one.
