Fitting led voltmeter
« on: May 01, 2019, 16:11:19 »
Having had the regulator fail on my 2010 wee thought it might be a good idea to fit a led voltmeter near the clocks to keep an eye on the charging. I cannt see any easy way of getting a wire live while ignition is on to connect to.I guess I could bare a bit of the sidelight wire and solder a wire to it, but has anyone found an easier or better solution?

You can buy a micro processor just like a larger warning light which you just clip in to the ignition lead and find an earth they have a code of flashes to tell you what is going on and when everything is OK it is either off or a steady light I can not remember which, I fitted one to an early 750 VFR because there was not charging light and it worked well and was not very expensive.

There should be a connector just behind the radiator on the near side that Suzuki use to fit their own heated grips. That is where I feed my satnav and LED voltmeter from.It is only live when the ignition is “on”.

In the end I chickened out of baring the insulation on a live wire as they are so fine and was worried about weakening the wire and causing future problems, so put a switch in the fused lead I'd already run to a 12v socket to power the satnav and ran wires from that to the voltmeter. New Taiwanese regulator/rectifier holding the charging voltage at about 14.1volts.

The voltage indicator that I fitted to my “Wee” is a tiny single indicator that is about 4mm across. It changes colour with different voltages, green OK, orange a little low and red very low, and only operates with the ignition on.I used to have one on my Honda PC800 many moons ago and it works perfectly. It even dims at night, very clever.I paralleled it with the satnav feed off the Suzuki grips connector.
