Oil leak - casing has corroded
« on: April 23, 2019, 09:28:13 »
New one on me this..... Nearly at work, stopped at the lights, set off again and foot slipped off the foot peg. Its really slippy, take a look at work and its pissing oil out somewhere.

Dig a bit deeper and its coming through the alternator casing near one the highest bolts, but the casing has corroded through.

New casing or can it be home repaired ?

Feeling pissed off as its an RAC taxi home for me - Thanks

Light weight vs durability. it's never be a problem in countries where salt isn't used.

My previous alternator casing was corroding exactly the same way, where the bolts are coming. New one still doing it slowly...
It is magnesium casing, not alloy, that is why it is happening.

Ordered chemical metal to try and bodge / fix this one and a TL one in black that's in better nick and will paint and fit that one at leisure. Maybe its time to change at 65K miles but because I do so many many miles in all weathers I  will just lose money hand over fist on anything interesting. I like the newer strom 1000, the XT 12 and the Triumph explorers but all would be worthless in 3 years.

Then why not consider buying a "worthless" 2014-2016 model now. Nothing to lose!

Here is the little bugger that caused the issue. Second hand casing painted and fitted.
