Am I being thick...(well thicker than normal)
« on: March 06, 2019, 17:22:20 »
Hi all,

I was hoping for a little technical advice so I may be posting in the wrong forum but I’m hoping it’s a relatively simple reply. I’m off to take the bike for it’s first service (2018 1000) but decided to oil the change as I had reached 300 miles. Easy I thought. I’ll just hop it onto the centre stand and oil the chain as I have seen loads do by manually spinning the wheel. However I couldn’t manually spin the wheel. I took the bike off steering lock, I turned the bike ‘on’ without starting it and still no avail. In the end I had to take it off and wheel the bike back, oiling in small sections.

Am I doing something wrong? (No doubt I’m doing lots wrong but anything in particular in regard to oiling the chain?)

Thank you...

Sounds like it's in gear/ not in neutral...

Put it in neutral if it isn't already. Check to see if the rear brake is binding.

I would say it is in gear. But ..... how easy does it roll on the ground and have you got the clutch pulled in when you do that?

Is the bike on level ground ? Is the wheel touching ground while on the centre stand ? Or as said , in neutral ?

Well it turns out that the chain was just a bit gunked up according to the blokes at blade when I took it in for a service. I’m pretty surprised as it didn’t seem that dirty as I’d only ridden 330 miles. They put some chain cleaner on it though and said it was fine. I’m guessing I’ll be doing similar this weekend when I give it’s good clean and give it a dose of XCP which should be arriving with a compressor tomorrow!

"Just a bit gunked up"?
It seems a bit difficult to imagine that on its own would immobilise the rear wheel. Sure it wasn't in gear or touching the deck? ( Fairly sure there's no handbrake to accidentally leave on.) Glad it's sorted, but I'd keep an eye on it in case there is another issue there.

A gunked up chain wouldn't stop your rear wheel from turning.

Something doesn't add up there. On a 300 mile bike it should be literally like new. Someone is pulling yerr pud...

could it be maybe lack of lube had made a link or two stiff around the sprocket meaning more force was needed to turn for link to straighten, had that happen to me many years ago after I used a bike in the wet and parked up for a few weeks.

sounds more like rear brake binding due to a sticking piston.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

I split my time between Reading and Newcastle so I hadn’t been on the bike for 6 days so I guess the brakes may have seized a little too? The wheel was definitely off the ground and the bike was definitely not in gear. Other than that minor issue I’m loving the bike. Very happy with my decision to swap from my 650 Versys and choice.
