Dropped my bike
« on: January 01, 2019, 17:02:45 »
The Thursday before Christmas I dropped my bike  :icon_no:
I used my bike to the dentist on the way home I let someone out of a building site I pulled up to a stop put my right foot down and it appears there was gravel on the road my foot slipped away and we both went down I felt such a fool  :angry-banghead:
This was about 5.30 pm so dark and busy a couple of car drivers stopped and helped me pick the bike up, I was about 4 miles from home so rode it home no problem, so I have had a look at it today just a bent bar end and a scuff on the hand guard ( heed crash bars fitted so no other damage) started it up and it smoked a little and smelt oily I went for a little ride round the block so was up to temperature pulled back on to the drive left it running and there was quite a bit of smoke coming out of the end cans which cleared when revved but was apparent again when ideling I will add the bike was only on its side for 2 mins max I was wondering if this will clear if I took her for a good run ? Any advice would be great.

Thank you in advance Alby

Sorry about your little spill , glad you are OK . :thumb:.
What colour is the smoke ? If it's white it's nothing to worry about .

Glad you're OK, bit of oil past the rings, enjoy the smoke while it lasts, it will clear.

Oh! dear, sorry to read this, but most of us have had that sort of thing happen. Hard to explain how a few bits of gravel on an otherwise smooth surface can bring us down, but it does.
If the bike feels and runs as it normally does then you're unlikely to have a problem.
It is possible that the white exhaust emission is normal, for a cold start, this time of year, but that now you have good cause to stand back and look at it.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

Hi brocket
No I don’t think so as it does smell oily I will give it a good run when I get time, but I am back to work tomorrow and got a christening at the weekend so as I say I will give it a good run when I can, apart from the bent bar end and the scuff on the hand guard the bike is fine and rides as good as ever :thumb:

The bike should have stopped as soon as it’s on its side. There is a tilt switch that stops the engine if you drop it.(Well mine does, don’t ask how I know).

Your tip over sensor is faulty, it should have cut off as soon as you dropped the bike.
If I remember it's located by your battery under the seat .

Yes, it's little box that says "UP" or "TOP". It should have rubber surrounding that keeps it vertical. One of my previous bikes wouldn't start after battery change and I found out the tilt switch was out of its bracket.

I have had my 650 for just over a year now and done 5500mls on it. hoping not to drop it as I dropped my gs1200 3 times, all low speed and had to hit the kill switch rapidly every time. I will check my suzi asap for a tilt switch. cheers and a happy new year.

To test the tilt switch, just remove it vertically from its rubber mount while the bike was running and then tilt (the switch, not the bike) on its side. The engine should turn off in second or two. If it doesn't, the tilt switch is faulty. I tested mine the first day after purchase and I still do it from time to time.
