Noise during ride
« on: October 23, 2018, 17:23:31 »
Recently, I noticed a strange pitched noise when accelerating in 4th and 5th gear at around 70-80 km/h, The same happens   when decelerating at about the same speed. The noise is not hearable before or after. It is very difficult to identify the source because of the wind and other noises. There isn't any vibrations associated with or any other strange behavior just noise. Any idea would be appreciated, thanks. :ty:

PS. I forgot it is V Strom 650 2012

Does this noise happen at any particular rpm ?

Gearbox is my guess. Mine had two gears (3rd and 6th if memory serves) that were noisier than the others on my bike. Never caused any problems. I found ear plugs fixed it...

Thanks blokes for sharing your experience. I may say that I am mechanically minded and have had the same thoughts. The whining sounds similar to worn diff on a car. Chain is not too tight, I can't believe that the gear box can fail after 24 000 km on the clock (but you never know!). I think I will check the rear bearing first as I noticed that the seal didn't look great when I changed Tyres 3 months ago. Anyway, the winter is knocking on a door, there will be plenty of time available to concentrate on the problem.

I don't think the gearbox is shot. Straight cut gears are noisy, that's just how it is. Manufacturing tolerances means some are noisier than others and in different gears. As long as the oil changes are done on time and with an appropriate grade of oil then there should be no reason to suspect the gearbox. Or are you a fan of doing burnouts?  At the mileage (kilometreage? ) it must be something like wheel bearings or tyre related.

I have a similar high pitch noise on my 2017 Vee, but only at certain rear pre load setting.
