2014 Vstrom 1000 OEM panniers
« on: September 09, 2017, 12:48:34 »
Hi folks, any one having issues with the OEM panniers, particularly the locks?  I have a 2014 (reg 2016) Vstrom 1000 that came with the OEM panniers. I've had it from new and have had 3 panniers replaced under warranty due to the locking mechanism.  The plate on the pannier itself, moves, blocking the slot in which the foot of the lock should go into, preventing it from closing.  I've never had an issue with the dealer or Suzuki themselves and they replace the pannier straight away, but its happened again, and I need to have a screwdriver in my pocket, ready to push the plate back into place.  Anyone else having the same problems? Or know of a solution?  Cheers.  DaveB

Yep
I've got the 2014 version and I have the same problem with one of the panniers. Unfortunately I bought second hand and it's out of warranty, so like you, I carry a little screwdriver, or I have to take the pannier off to put it right. very annoying

I had a similar problem before I got rid of them. I seem to remember I wedged some closed cell foam or something into them and it never happened again.

Sorry for the delay, thanks for the reply folks, thought I was going a bit mad, according to the dealer and Suzuki customer service, it's never happened before; clearly they're wrong.  I'll keep nagging them to sort it whilst still in warranty.  :thumb:

The oem panniers are compact and robust but let down by the fragile locking mechanism. I had one fail within a month and the dealer fixed it under warranty although patronising showed me "how to avoid breaking it again". Since then I have had no repeat issue despite repeated touring  use. I recommend regular lubrication with wd40.

was it his "patronising" advice that led to everything being OK since?

I need to know how not to break them! Mine have been OK for 2+ years so far.

Well after 5 replaced panniers, I managed to get Suzuki to give me a refund.  Not quite all the money I paid, but enough to get a pair of Givi Dolomiti.  Love them and not that much wider than the handle bars. :lala:
