DL1000 2014 rear wheel.
« on: July 20, 2018, 09:36:50 »
Hello. While in Scotland I found play in my rear wheel when cleaning the chain one night.  There was about 1mm movement on the drive side bearings.  Once home I ordered new ones and fitted them. Trouble is the play is still there, its less now, maybe half a mm but I can still feel it.
Would a kind Veek owner please check for me. Place bike on main stand, grip the rear wheel at the 12 o'clock position and pull back and forth on the tyre. This is where I feel the play but only here. Bearings and wheel fitted correctly

Hi Porter,
I'm not mechanically minded but have done as you instructed with mine on the centre stand and there is definitely very slight movement. To be honest its nothing that I would worry about. Cheers Ken

Thanks Ken. I just noticed it while on holiday,  I needed a new tyre anyway so changed the bearings too though they looked fine.
You can feel it better from the exhaust side than the chain side.

You need to check exactly where the movement actually is. If it's a little rocking movement from side to side in the sprocket carrier or if it's actual vertical movement of the carrier. A little rocking movement is OK and is there as part of the normal running clearance of the bearing. Vertical movement of the carrier indicates bearing wear and needs further investigation. A very little rotational movement of the carrier is normal as well as it's the carrier moving in the rear wheel cush drive rubbers. It should only be a tiny bit and hardly apparent. Any more and further investigation is needed. I'd be surprised if the sprocket carrier bearing or cush drive rubbers need replacing on a bike this recent, unless you've covered a very high mileage or have had the chain adjusted too tight.

I changed all three bearings with good quality koyo. There are 23k miles on the bike. The cush rubber's are all OK. You only get it at the 12 o'clock position. It feels and looks like play in the drive side wheel bearing. You can just feel a wee knock and with the old bearings you could see the wheel move. Its only a small amount but annoying.

When you say the cush rubber are OK, did you do the cush rubber test? The test is to lift the wheel up by holding on the sprocket. If the wheel lifts with out coming loose then the cush rubber are tight / solid enough. If loose, the sprocket will let go of the wheel and the wheel will fall free. Take care that the wheel (brake disk) is protected if the wheel should come loose. The cush rubbers can be shimmed with strips of inner tube for a tighter fit.

My free play was on the right hand side of my `14 swingarm. It was between the spacer and the swingarm bolt itself, not bearing related. Adjusting swingarm bolt does not fix it. To fix it I used a special "Bearing cup retainer"compound similar to Loctite. This compound reacts with metals and causes a type of corrosion in a confined space. This in turn causes the metals to swell and the clearances tighten up. No more freeplay. Hope this helps.
