ABS Problems DL650
« on: May 11, 2018, 07:30:52 »
I had a flat battery and my blokes jumped it with a car battery. The ABS started to run all the time. even when switched off. The local mechanic said because they had used a larger amp battery to start it, that has caused the relay (?) in the ABS to fry. So pulled the fuse and now riding without ABS. Anyone can offer any help would be appreciated. Bike has only done around 5,500 kilometers.

And there is the very reason you should never jump a bike from a car battery.
If as said the relay is "fried"  replacing the relay should sort the issue .

It's OK to jump as long as the car isn't running isn't it? Just to get it straight in my head in case the need ever arises. Or am I living in la la land.

I personally wouldn't but if you really need to in an emergency,  without the car running connect the two pluses and the negatives should be one on the car battery and the other to the chassis of the bike only. There will always be a risk to it though as you are putting 45amps + through your bike .

Bugger it then ma mate, not worth even the slightest risk when you are a long way from home. I will rely on the little battery jump pack I carry for just such an occurrence.  :thumb:

Does anyone have a recomendation for a supplier of the relay in the UK? I found one on Ebay in the US, $12. I live in the Philippine and the shipping is about $50. I don't mind paying it but it would come by mail, and lets just say the mail in PH usually goes missing. If I could find in the UK I can get it sent to my daughter and when I wisit later this year I can collect.

There shouldn't be a reason why you can't use a car battery, the starter will draw the same current regardless of what current the battery is capable of supplying. Don't have the car running though.

I'm with BigPie.... can't see any reason not to use a car battery! (I think this discussion's come up before  :fix:)
Haven't looked at a wiring diagram, but is the ABS relay special in any way, or just another common or garden 4- or5- connection relay? If the latter, TimH can hopefully get one locally.

I'd be trying to borrow one of a local strommer to verify before shelling out. I think there's 2 of them. Stick omron G8ms-s23  in to ebay.

Suzuki and an independant mechanic are now telling me its not the relay, its the internal controller and the whole abs unit needs to be replaced. at $2000 plus, that hurts. Almost 1/4 of the bikes price.
I live in the philippines and there are very few stroms here. On the Island I live on, I think there is only 1 other, a 1000cc.
Thanks for all the input blokes. BTW when we jumped the bike, the battery was not connected to a vehicle.
