And unlike the old "lighter" sockets, the DIN ones stay connected rather than jumping out at each bump in the road!

Or get something like this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UK-12V-5V-Waterproof-Motorcycle-Cigarette-Lighter-Socket-USB-Power-Charger/252920774146?_trkparms=aid%3D888007%26algo%3DDISC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D49138%26meid%3D0822ee73357d484e99bf8547e1692bf6%26pid%3D100009%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D141554443973%26itm%3D252920774146&_trksid=p2047675.c100009.m1982

I run mine via a relay so it's on/off with the ignition - on an older bike I kept it live but hid it under the seat, on a trip a few years ago my mate asked how my phone hadn't gone flat as his had died a couple of days ago. Pity he didn't bring a fag lighter charger...

As for manufacturers sticking with the cigar lighter socket... It's because too many accessories were already made with the cigar plug on it and it was a bit late to be changing the socket. And also they are lazy. The main problem is that they are not really a standard size so some things can be a sloppy fit which can cause problems.

The DIN (or Hella socket as I know it) are far better but you either have to swap all your electrical items onto a Hella plug (nigh on impossible for some things) or use an adaptor. The Din socket is far superior to the fag lighter and can handle a greater flow of amps and is a much better idea for air compressors but be warned... You must make sure that you don't have the plug at an angle when slotting it in as it is possible to touch both terminals inside and it then blows the fuse.

Make sure you buy plugs with contacts all the way round like this one

and not the two pronged versions.

Also do not be tempted to buy the DIN/Fag lighter combined plug as they are crap.
