Another Newbie
« on: March 29, 2018, 22:36:08 »
Hello all,
Another newbie here. I am looking at buying another bike and shortlist is looking like a DL1000 Strom, BMW R1200GS or the newish Honda 1000 cross tourer ( which is the rank outsider at the moment). Have always like the look of the Strom and very attractive deals around at moment on new. Anyone any experience as between Strom and GS. Test rode the GS and it was a cracking bike - but then at around £8k more ( the model I test rode with all the bells and whistles) than the Vstrom  - it should be. Will be test riding the Strom 1000 in next week or two. Any views welcome. BMW scare stories of high service costs and certain reliability issues are  a bit concerning. Haven't heard anything but good reports on Strom. Thanks all.

I've just traded my Crosstourer for a 650 Vstrom......The weight difference, running costs etc made it an easy decision  :icon_wink:

:welcome2: to you, the 1000 Strom is reliable, there are a few things worth considering, stock tyres are adequate, but there are far better tyres to have for wet weather and general grip, there are a couple of electrical connections under the front of the tank that benefit from shrouding with inner tube or the like, and a spray of ac50 or other electrical protection, inexpensive, but will take an hour to do.
Keep your chain lubed and you will be getting 12 to 14 thousand miles or more.
The bike can be reasonably economical, but like anything, if you ride hard it will be less so,these bikes are not  aerodynamically great.
It's an easy bike to live with imo, mine has lived outside since 2014 and stood up well after a good protective spray with ac50.
