Help it's getting hot!
« on: December 28, 2017, 17:26:17 »
Hi all, I went for a lil ride to Norwich today, big mistake! Massively busy so ended up in stand still traffic for a while. My bike got to 4 bars but I didn't hear the fan, I then stalled it and it wouldn't restart, struggled to turn over. I think the battery is getting a bit weak to be honest. I then got it started and carried on but the bike got right up in to the red so I managed to pull.in to BMW morrad to stop and let it cold down. It didn't dump the coolant though but I still couldn't hear the Fan.
What's the most likely to be at fault here, the fan or temp sender on the rad? And what's the easiest way to test?
 Oh it's a k5 650
 Cheers

If you short the fan it should run, that will eliminate a siezed/shagged fan.

Quick Fault checks are low coolant (check at rad),  fan switch fuse ,fan switch, fan (could be jammed).

Regarding low coolant. You may have a slight leak that's not noticed and over time results in similar symptoms.

Also if you have a low battery while running I'd do some checks on your charging system.

Thank I'll have to get it out tomorrow and have a look. I think it's the original battery, it's started fine after I'd left it so I'm guessing the battery is just getting weak. Where's best to short the fan to get it to run?

If your bike started fine after you left it for a while this means your battery is OK , basically it's regenerated its power when turned off .
I'd still check the charging system .
The fan switch should just need to be earthed out, any good earth point will do .

As the Rat said, unplug the fan wire from the radiator switch, turn on the ignition and short the two wire contacts together. That should turn on the fan. If not, the fan is burned out, stuck or a wire to the fan is disconnected.

Just a quick update, it was my fault.... when I serviced it I couldn't have plugged the fan in properly.  At least it was a cheap fix haha just hope I having damaged the engine from getting too hot.

Good to hear you've found the problem. We're all human, the odd mistake is just an opportunity to learn.  :)
