Has anyone upgraded their rear shock?
Now find myself 2 up with all camping gear, just wondering if upgrading rear shock will help

Definitely. The stock shock is more appropriate for a solo rider and runs a gas/oil emulsion. Having a stronger spring and the appropriate damping for that spring plus keeping the gas and oil separate can make a huge difference.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

I agree. Three years ago I had my rear shock modified, same spring (mostly solo riding), different fork oil, and a separate chamber for gas / oil. The result is a complete, positive,  change.

I was in the same position as you except my rear panniers were grounding and the tyre was rubbing on the shelf while on a camping tour of Spain. I left the original shock on and just replaced the stock spring with a new Hyperpro. Never had a bit of trouble since.

I've a hyperpro spring in the rear of my 1000 as I'm always two up, works a treat. Yes a new shock would be better but more expensive,  much more. Two up I needed max preload on the standard spring where as on the hyperpro 15 clicks of a maximum of 25 works fine. Even two up with topbox and panniers I've never used more than 20 clicks.  If your shock is in good nick and not to many miles try the hyperpro.

I fitted a Nitron shock which gives far superior handling compared to the standard setup.

I have bought a Hyperpro rear shock which I have had made for me taking into consideration weight of rider and pillion, typical load etc. This is for my RTW trip starting in May. Discussed with Hyperpro just a spring but went for the whole shock
Changing the spring will improve matters. I also opted for their progressive front springs which are not expensive.
