Be very sure you have the problem properly diagnosed. The rectifier/regulator is rarely a problem. The typical charging system problem is the stator. That being said, a series type R/R is better for stator life. http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,20426.0.html

Cheers Greywolf , as usual you are correct I tested the reg/rec as per YouTube vids and the meter says its fine , so I guess its now a case of replacing the stator any recommendations appreciated

cheers

On average, the OEM stator is likely to last longer than aftermarket or rewound stators but costs more. It's your choice. I you ride far from home, I'd go with an OEM replacement and a series R/R. If an outage wouldn't be a major difficulty, just replacing the stator with a cheap one may be considered. In any case, mounting a voltmeter so you'll see if the charging system fails so you can still ride to a safe place on battery power is a good idea.

I would double check all the charging system before ordering anything, Take off your stator cover and check the rotor magnets haven't come loose as this can also cause charging issues when your stator is perfectly fine.

I'll second that. Older Vee's are prone to having the magnet glue fail and the rotor magnets get out of phase. I'd take the magneto cover off and check the rotor magnets for even position and the stator for blackened wire varnish.

I've had a charging issue as well . when tested the stator was going to earth so it's been sent for a rewind. New Suzuki part was £400 +vat while a rewind with 12 month guarantee has come in at £85 plus postage.
