TPS adjustment needed?

Ever since my electrical issue back in January I've been thinking my bike has been surging/hunting on constant throttle. To begin with it thought I was being paranoid given the electrical issue, but now I'm not so sure.

It reminds me of the symptoms I had after the 7,500 service (when the incorrect sparkplugs had been fitted). It almost feels like the rear brake is being dabbed. No issues when accelerating/decelerating. I'd had a service done in January too which included sparplugs so have checked them (CR8EIA9) to rule them out.

Having looked through various posts here and associated links I had a look at the TPS settings which seem to be _C00 at idle, -C00 at 1500rpm and -C00 at around 3000rpm.

From what I gather, this needs adjusting as should be -C00 at idle. Is this easy to do or should I save myself the hassle and go to a mechanic?

Sparkplug  (top rear cylinder) been in since mid January 17.

I don't have any idea of your mechanical prowess. To adjust the TPS, and it needs it, you'll need to free the tank and raise the back of it on its prop. The TPS is held by a single tamper proof Torx bolt requiring a special Torx bit. It needs to be loosened and the TPS repositioned. It's a fiddly adjustment. Just tightening the bolt can move the TPS out of adjustment. It takes about a half second for the dash to react to the adjustment too. If that sounds doable to you, try it.

Thanks GW. Glad to hear I don't need a 'thingymajiggywottsit' to do this. I should be able to manage loosening a torx bolt and adjusting  :ty:

Shame I didn't realise that the day I'd posted as I had the panels and tank off but had to reassemble. Hopeful I'll give it a go at the weekend

It's not just any Torx bit. You need the type with the hole in the end.

Finally found some time to look at the TPS this evening.

Loosened the T25 screw, adjusted it a tiny amount took about 2 minutes and this was the result:



Now I just need to test ride it tomorrow before putting the bike back together.

Cheers GW. I'll post an update once I've been out on it (tackling some other maintenance jobs whilst it's stripped).

In the meantime, for anyone else needing to adjust the TPS, here's a picture of the screw and TPS:

(Edit: my phone has uploaded the picture incorrectly- it needs rotating 90 degrees clockwise - the right hand side is the frame)

I'm starting to think my TPS is on the way out. My idle isn't stable on my glee, but the rest of the time it seems fine :S

That's a typical indication of a worn TPS, especially if it is worse when warm. One check for confirmation is to turn the engine off and run the throttle between full on and full off a few times. If that helps temporarily, it's the TPS for sure. If not, it still may be the TPS but may be a TBS or something exotic.

Managed to get out on the bike today. Throttle response seems much better/less jerky at low speed. Definitely worth the effort :thumb:

I've got some of those Torx bits with the hole - I bought them so I could get the back panel off the washing machine! Never used them since.

I may need to investigate the TPS on my Vee as I had a bit of a snatchy throttle issue the other day but it may turn out to have been a bad batch of petrol...

I know there are two tps on the 650 can you tell me which one to adjust

I think there's only one TPS and the other is a TBS...?? Anyway you want the rear one as seen from the clutch side.

(It should look like the one in the picture above)

The TPS is the lower of the two. The top one is the secondary or STPS,

HI

Completed a TPS adjustment on my AL2 yesterday, as I felt the throttle action was a litlle snatchy.
Found that the '-' moved to the upper position at just over 3k revs, engine at normal running temp.

Easier to adjust this TPS than on my K8 1000, and soon had the same mark moving to its upper position at 2k revs.
Nice easy job after locating the TPS, and the bike did feel a little more 'relaxed', afterwards.

Bike now coming up to 71k miles, and still a pleasure to ride.

Hi all
I have just fitted the new tps and set it up so that the line goes to the top about 2000rpm . Carried out a road test to find the bike more reponsive. And the stumbling is a lot better but still there .  No popping through the exhaust  now which is better
