I just plug in a dual port usb adapter when I need it.

I have a ciggy lighter socket on my V-strom, which ain't a whole lot of use to me as my satnav mount is hard-wired and everything else I use needs a USB socket. And I don't smoke.  Question: if I buy a USB adapter for it, how likely is it that my iPhone or bluetooth comms unit will get fried if I try to charge them from there?  I have no clue how reliable these things are are; do the devices themselves include any form of protection against surges(?) etc etc?

Had no trouble in 3/4 years charging comms units, phone or tablet on bike or in car.

TipsyMcStagger had a Blue Sea USB plug laying around. Just in and out after connecting/soldering the wires. In his link he also mentions the connector model if you want to leave the original parts alone.
