I've had this on all three of my 650 v stroms, it sound what's like a loose tappet when pulling off at low revs and disappeared as the revs rise . The first time I heard it I was back to the dealers several times and have been told lots of different answers from the famous "they all do that" to someone who said it was "end float on the camshaft" ..in the end I just forgot about it . it never seem to get any louder and I have done many thousands of miles ...so...

That's good to hear and thanks for that, bit worried as lve heard that there has been a call up for valve bucket replacements but cannot find any information on this and don't know if my noises are related in any way, off to Germany on the bike later this year and a bit concerned. However feeling a bit better for your remarks.

Thanks again for the replies, if I did have valve bucket problems would I hear it while the engine is just idling in neutral?

In short, if a gap had opened up due to excessive wear you'd hear it.

Be aware that riding your bike without earplugs throws up all kinds of scary sounding stuff that you never notice with plugs in. I always think the bike is about to lunch itself when I do it.

I have a noisy tappet, had it since a few thousand miles, could be cam end float, could be a wide gap, it's got no worse in 16,000 miles. If something was wrong it'd get progressively worse over a relatively short period of time. In fact, I left an exhaust clearance deliberately wide on an older bike so I could have an early warning if they were closing up.

Thank you, putting my mind at ease, we can look at all the problems on any forum and think Hello I've got that. Maybe all in the mind.

I'm pleased that someone else can hear this noise. I've owned my 13 reg 650  (7k miles) for just 4 weeks and 900 miles.
Heard this noise from day one, but dealer cannot! And neither can I when he rode the bike and did "drive-passes".
I described the noise exactly as your description (loose tappet), but that's not logical - it would sound all the time.
Rides superb though, Just baffled and learning to live with it. :icon_exclaim:

My '14 plate 650 sounds like you describe, it has done since new. Its had the tappet recall done and still sounds the same. Its never got any worse and I generally use earplugs anyway so it has never unduly worried me.  Its positively silent compared to my previous Guzzi!!
