I had that when my head bearings were going .... stopped when I had them changed. .
Raise the front wheel and move it from side to side ... It may feel notchy  .... Whilst the front wheel is lifted stand in front of the bike and pull the forks towards you ... If you feel movement the bearings may be gone. .

I thought this was a well known problem...

I get the knock when going over bumps, even after the bearings were renewed and tightened  :GRR:

Sometimes the "clonk" is wear to the tank front mounting / bolt.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

Yeah, I get it as well occasionally. Pretty sure it is the tank bolt. There is a fix on the site somewhere I think if it annoys you too much.

Check your headrace bearings just the same

The bearings as described by Holmsey.
I call em headrace because I am old fashioned.

Ideally put the bike on the centre stand and get someone to push the back wheel down and hold the bike still. You stand or squat in front of the bike, grasp the lower fork legs and check for rocking movement in the steering stem bearings by pulling and pushing the fork legs. If any movement is felt then it is most likely to be the bearings. Although they can be tightened I have always found the bearing surfaces have become pitted by the time any noticeable movement is evident.  New bearings is the answer.

This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

No, knocking isn't normal. Even new bikes can have badly adjusted head bearings.  They're not sealed units like wheel bearings.  Loose ones will wear quickly causing notchiness.  Easy to check, as advised above.

Just a update for you blokes
I am having issues with the bike cutting out but that's another problem so while had the fairings off removed the tank and put insulation tape on the tank bolt not too much and greased it up replaced so far no banging and clunking at the front again happy days
