Brake Pin Pain
« on: April 02, 2017, 20:53:52 »
Decided on a whim today to remove/clean/re-fit my Glee brake pads.
It wasn't long before I changed my mind, I'm now putting it off until I buy some replacement pins.
My bike has done a little over 7000 miles, but that's been enough for the pins to corrode and resist my initial 'sympathetic' efforts to remove them. I recall my old SV650 suffered the same issue and was oos while I ordered replacement pins, having had to use butchery to remove the rusted originals.
Anyhow, I've applied some Penol anti-seize lube, and will try again when I've got 'spares'.. just in case.
Anyone have any top-tips to ease removal? On my SV I eventually had to hack saw one in half, then use 'gentle persuasion' to get it out.  :fix:

I like ACF50 if penetrating oil doesn't work. It doesn't just penetrate and lubricate. It chemically attacks corrosion.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Don't have the bike with me so I will try to describe best I can. If you ever take your caliper off drill a small hole maybe 4mm at the opposite end of where the pin enters the caliper. You can in future use that hole to tap the pin out. Bear in mind the caliper housing may be a delicate alloy.

Yep, I took the R-clips out (but I can imagine they could easily be missed by some!)
Not sure if I fancy drilling a hole to drift em out, as I mentioned, I only made a half-hearted attempt to move them, as last time with my SV, a more serious effort resulted in them no longer being 'serviceable' ;-) so will wait until I've replacements to hand.
I wish they'd make them out of half-decent material in the first place, life would be much easier.
But then, as many others who've worked on bikes know all too well, I'm convinced they're all put together by unfeasibly strong Japanese housewives.. with fingers longer than ET.. and four hands.  :dl_hyperhysteria:

I had the same with my Triumph. The pins were made of cheese so I ended up rounding the hex heads. The only way out was to hammer in (gently) a slightly larger hex wrench and hope. Sure enough they came out. Some SS pins later and some copperslip and I hope that's it.

Apply some heat with a blowtorch. They come out a lot easier.
