tom tom power supply
« on: March 07, 2017, 21:44:24 »
where is the best place to get 12v power for my tom tom gps?
is there a designated plug hidden somewhere like I had on my previous BMW gs.  or tap into a sidelight wire. or back to fuse box or battery. and what value fuse if I put one inline to the gps.
do the v-stroms use can-bus wiring?   I've only had the bike 2 days it's a pre registered 2016. I managed to put 48 miles on it yesterday between showers and hail stones. but love it.

One of BigPies aux boxes provide a great source for switched power when the ignition comes on. I have my Rider400 power plugged in there

Heated grips connector, just behind radiator l.h. side is switched. Accessory socket, in the r.h. side of fairing by headlight is permanently live. Searches on here and Stromtroopers will show where and what they look like. (Then buy a Bigpie box to run the heated grips. )
If you modify your profile to include your bike model and year it helps people to point you in the right direction.

I have just bought a 2016 pre reg dr1000 and my Tom Tom Sat Nav is wired direct to the battery.  Is it a good idea to wire it through the ignition? If not, what is the best way to connect it to the bike?

Make sure to fuse any live wire added to the horn or a short circuit in any of the added wiring will blow the main fuse and turn off the entire bike.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.

Use a fuse rated for 120% or so of the rated draw of the added device and things should be fine.
