The two main reasons for stalling a K7 or later 650 are:

1. The TPS is worn so the CPU doesn't "know" where the throttle is positioned and can't supply the proper amount of fuel.

2. The clutch lever switch is bypassed and the wrong information about the position of the clutch lever is fed to the CPU.

If you can start the engine with the clutch lever out, #2 is the problem. Otherwise, you likely need to replace the TPS.

Thanks for the reply I can't start the bike without the clutch engaged so it's the tps I guess

That is most likely the problem.

Would changing the fuel filter work before I start spending huge amounts on a Tps switch changed plugs as they were choked up

The fuel filter will cause problems at high rpms if it is clogged. It will not affect idle as that is where fuel volume is minimal.

Would the fuel filter cause something like a surging/pulsing effect at a steady speed at around 6,000 rpm,  or would the symptoms be different at speed I.e. under acceleration?

A clogged fuel filter will affect acceleration and prevent exceeding a certain speed. It's unlikely to cause surging unless you are right at the speed where fuel need just begins to be unavailable and the bike won't go faster.

I'm pretty sure mine surges/pulses a little at motorway speeds and has done since new. No problems with stalling though.

That's good to know, so stalling = TPS, not able to go above certain speeds = fuel filter. Surging normal and not another impending fault  :thumb:

Surging is NOT normal in my opinion. It could be a fuel or a spark issue causing the surging. Fuel could be bad (dirty). A fuel flow test should be a good place to start. Amount of fuel resulting from the test, plus let the tested fuel stand for a while then check for contamination (water or dirt). Spark plug or coil lead could be breaking down or have a bad connection. Even an electrical fault or battery / earth connection could be causing the surging.

Surging is not often reported on 650s. That could be TPS related too.

A TPS will wear out by the wiper on its potentiometer wearing the through the carbon track so the change in resistance as the throttle turns is no longer linear. It's not repairable so must be replaced. It is a fiddly adjustment to get the new one properly set as a slight movement, including the simple act of tightening the mounting screw, can make a large difference in the reading of the position.
