Torque Settings - Dry v Wet
« on: January 15, 2017, 18:41:11 »
I realise that torque settings shown in manuals are normally DRY settings.
Like most people, I don't use dry bolts and either fasteners are oiled, greased or thread locked.
I was always told that for oiled threads you should reduce the given torque value by around 20% but the torque setting where thread locker is used seems a little unclear.
I tend to knock 10% off the torque setting when using Loctite.
Is that similar to what other people do?
Thanks

Thread locker isn't much of a lubricant so wouldn't need much reduction. On the other hand, not as much bolt stretch would be needed to keep the connection from backing out so it wouldn't hurt. 20% is typically noted for lubricated threads but mission critical connections will include tables for corrections to be made depending on materials and environmental considerations. Since we aren't going into outer space, deep sea, radioactive areas, or other chemically unusual environments, 20% lower with lubricants or unchanged with thread locker is fine. There is no need to overthink the situation. What needs more care is Suzuki's published settings. Some are very questionable and have caused problems.

People also say you should de-rate as a thread wears or if a bolt is re-used..

Personally I don't think bike engines are that stressed, or tolerances are that close to the max., so I tend not to derate. I clean & degrease the bolts where practical but often thread lock... except for engine casing bolts as their thread are made of cheese so I live in fear of them.

I actually don't use a torque wrench for small bolts, I've just developed a feel for them - using 3 fingers and a small 1/4" rachet.
I just tighten until it goes loose then back up 1/4 of a turn.

Thanks blokes!
One of the most sickening feelings is when you are giving a fastener a bit of and extra tweek and suddenly it goes slack..............................argh!
Hence my great desire in life not to over-torque anything and save myself tons of grief.

I've not yet had to resort to it but most threads are easily fixed with a helicoil, or an insert.
Once I actually wreck a thread (not happened yet) I'll order in a full kit.

A mate of mine (when working on older bikes), would "upgrade" all the engine casing threads with helicoils as a matter of course, just to avoid frustration later on.. :fix:

I didn't put "thanks BLOKES"
I put "thanks G.U.Y.S"

Very strange. This forum incorporates self-altering posts!

That's the Americanism filter. I've seen it at work often for some reason.

It's not strange at all, we assume the vast majority of members here will be from the UK and therefore won't need daft American words  :thumb:

What is daft about G.U.Y.S?
Are you saying I am daft for using a daft word?
So am I only allowed to use terminology that refers to men rather than a term that is used in a unisex manner?
I can't abide the word BLOKE.
So if the censor doesn't like American words what will happen if I type in President T R U M P?

In answer to your first question, yes, any English/British person who adopts the G word sounds daft.

Your second point confuses a reference to an American circus  with an Americanism.

Thanks for that.
They usually say blondes are dizzy rather than daft but perhaps I'm going up in the world.
I like your tent picture underneath your message.
What are those strings holding the tent down called?
Let me think..............Got it!

Indeed, and one of our favourite riders is Bloke Martin  :thumb:

Work with it rather than against it, firstly you will be doing the English language a service and secondly you might have a bit of fun.

And that's why Bloke Martin is a vamper and not a camper
