Cigarette lighter socket oddity?
« on: January 01, 2017, 14:17:50 »
My Glee arrived with a lighter socket fitted courtesy of the previous owner; I have never had occasion to need it until the other day, when I discovered it didn't work.  Investigation showed that at the bottom of the socket is a red plastic inner, which reduces the internal diameter by about half, and prevents the plug going fully in and making electrical contact.  WTF?  Never seen this before - can anyone shed any light on it?  Wondering if the inner is some sort of adapter for some other plug, and whether I can prise it out? Seems very rigidly fixed in place though and unlikely to move easily.   Odd.

I wonder if that's a BMW type socket. As Matchless says

You lot are great, thanks very much!   Spot on; the red gizmo is identical to the pic in matchless' post, and knowing that and being comfortable with giving it a bit more welly, I was just able to extract it.

The bad news, however, is that the ciggy socket still isn't working; neither it nor the adjacent USB socket are receiving any power (even with the engine running).   :angry-banghead:

Oh well, there's a project for another day!

It shouldn't take too much to trace the wires and find the fuse  :fix:

Well, yeah, hopefully!  Haven't had the bike very long though and so far my attempts at DIY maintenance have been, shall we say, not very productive.   Seemed to spend most of a Saturday trying (and failing) to remove the fairing/side panels, in order to get under the tank!  All a far cry from the last bike I owned (and maintained 100% myself) 30 years ago... anyway, I've since found some very helpful 'stripdown' videos on YouTube so hopefully my next attempt will go a little better

Matchless is indeed correct at identifying the object. The plug in particular is a useless item as they tend to be a sloppy fit in the socket, they then short out the socket and the fuse blows.
So hopefully all you need to do is find and replace the fuse.

And don't be too gentle getting the panels off. They are tough and flexible, a godsend given the crappy design.  The manual shows the connectors, but I couldn't really see how they attached until I wrestled the buggers off.
