Servicing
« on: January 13, 2017, 14:46:37 »
Hello, my main dealer wants to charge me £300.00 for a 7000 mile service on my 2014 DL650 telling me he has to do a bit more than a normal oil & filter and inspections, Can anyone throw any light on this or am I being ripped of.??? Thanks

You made the mistake of going into a main dealer. That's the snide answer but they are truly brilliant at bumping up servicing costs.

There's a bloke I use for my Triumph who is factory trained and visits your home/work. Great fella and way under dealer prices. Better service too cos you can see him doing it.

Is there so such a bloke for Stroms?

If it's out of warranty I'd use a good local service provider.
Maybe if you posted your location up here someone will be able to point you to a 'known' good mechanic who will use official Suzuki parts and not charge an arm and leg.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

If it's out of warranty, all it needs is an oil change. In fact, with the oil change interval being changed to 6000 or 7500 miles recently, I forget which but either is okay, you don't even need that.

Total rip off, do it yourself and you'll know it's done right, oil and filter is all you need, 15 min job.

At that mileage its an oil / filter change and general check over , 1 hours labour max, £300 is far to much.
In order to keep your warranty you can use any VAT registered bike repair shop that uses genuine parts to have your service done.

in fact it doesn't even need to be a bike mechanic,,  I'm now on a Triumph, but I believe its all the same with other manufacturers,  you need to use OE (original equipment) parts whilst in warranty, but not after,  and the service needs to be carried out by a competent person.. Take a for instance,, my step son is a HGV Fitter by trade, but has owned and serviced, built, mended and fettled bikes since he was in his teens (now 34) I would trust him to be more competent than a bike dealership trained apprentice just out of his time..  Do not let main dealers scare you and charge the earth,, go to a local bike mechanic..
Or as suggested above , do your own oil and filter change

On this point, is there anywhere on this forum that lists trusted bike mechanics by area? If not, is it something that could be useful? I'm at the mercy of the dealers as I just don't know any other mechanics.

The following is from Suzuki GB web site Q&A section.

Will Suzuki honour my warranty if my motorcycle is serviced by a non Suzuki Dealer?

Yes, so long as any defects are not the result of any service related issues
If a non Suzuki Dealer services my motorcycle, do they have to use genuine Suzuki parts?

No

Tusker, be mindful Triumph wrote to Bike magazine a year or so ago saying their bikes have to be serviced by a Triumph Dealer otherwise they won't honour the warranty. Unlike cars, motorbikes aren't exempt from having to use manufacturer's dealers (up to each manufacturer)

14 reg, won't that be out of warranty anyway?
If doing to spec, they may be unnecessarily changing the plugs too.

As said earlier, an oil/filter change will do.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, the bike is out of warranty and is running perfectly, I am more than capable of changing the oil and filter and inspections, and I think that's what I'll do.
Next Question, does it really matter about not having stamped up service book?.

No

Ideally, make a note of date/meleage & what you've done, keeping receipts etc help back it up.

I always thought that we cannot use fully synthetic oils in motorcycles because the clutch would not grip, however I am seeing fully synthetic oils for motorcycles. How is this???

That's a duplicate question. Please only ask a question in one place. See your other post.
