'Whirly Whistle' :)
« on: November 05, 2016, 18:48:29 »
So I have started to hear what I can only describe as a 'whirly whistle' dull in sound but very specific. It occurs exactly at 35 mph and above without fail. Even with clutch in.

At first I thought it was my Givi Airflow but I've adjusted it same noise, then I removed the extension of the airflow and same noise.

I'm pretty sure its coming from front end, and always at the same speed and above.

So I'm thinking bearings ?

I don't think its brakes related as they feel OK and there doesn't appear to be any pull left or right on the front but perhaps warped disks could be another.

Anything else? anyone had similar ?

When my visor is open it sounds like there's someone behind me with a massive sub woofer playing deep hard house. Took me a while before I realised it was actually my lid making the noise. Could it be your helmet in some way?

Laughing, I get the same thing but it seems to be as I slow down to about 15mph and then vanishes. I never asked about it on here before because I couldn't describe the noise properly but you got it bang on ma mate!

Pretty confident it ain't the helmet as the noise is there if visor is up or down and with vents open or closed. Plus it wasn't always there it appeared around 2 months back. But I always put it down to wind until now I drove around and purposefully tried to spot the noise or pinpoint the where abouts.  I'm pretty sure front end somewhere.

I have the same sound on my Vee2 2014.
For a long time couldn't find out where it was coming from. Then I talked to one rider with 45 years of riding experience and and over 30 motorcycles owned. He said, you've washed your bike at pressure washer station and then it appeared few weeks after. Yes. He was right. It appeared just few weeks after first pressure washing. He explained that he had the same problem on some previous bikes, regardless of the brand. He said that the detergent from pressure washer gets into the front wheel bearing and sometimes into the rear one. Nothing to do, it's not worth changing the bearings so I learned to live with it. He said he doesn't do that for years now and if he has to use pressure washer, he choose only the option with clean water and he has never had the problem again.
So, I'll know in few months after I trade my ride for 2017 Vee2.
And yes, I owned the Glee before Vee2 and never went to pressure washing and I've never had the noise.

Good man Bosnjo, I always said washing bikes was bad for them, wipe the headlights/taillight the odd time and let the rain do the rest!!

Well that cause can definitely be discounted in my case, I am far too tight to spend money on washing a bike!

Have you changed your tyres recently. When I put Anakee 3 on my glee. The front tyre whines at around 40mph upwards.

Changed tyres recently but the sound was there before hand. Definitely pressure wash them il take the front off and look at the bearings. I'm pretty sure that's where it's coming from

Hi there I got a 650.its a 2009 plate.when I got it.it hadn't been used all year and year before only covered 200 mile.same problem adjusted wind shield tried everything.only happened between 30-40ish. found out it was the two magnets that rotate inside each other on the side of wheel which sends signal to speedo. take apart plenty of multi perpose grease.magic no more whistle.easy to do.take photo of position of sensor it locates in fork lower.hope this helps.

you I was going to check the Speed Sensor whilst wheel off too make sure its greased up. I've ordered bearings anyway so might aswell swap them when there.

Glad its not in my head I've driven down roads hanging down the side of the bike looking like a right badass trying to locate the noise location  :)

So the bearings arrived, took wheel off ones on it appeared pretty solid. And. In great nick, decided to swap out anyway while have new. Using trusty rawlplug bearing remover swapped them over easy.

The speed sensor was quite dry and must have been the origin so greased it up good.

Had bike out for an hour whistle gone. Problem solved.

So do you think the whistle was the bearings or the speed sensor.
