How much is this going to cost me?
« on: September 13, 2016, 09:30:06 »
After a 3500 mile trip and leaving my bike in some very dodgy places without any problem I park it up outside my house on my return and wake to find some....I can't really use the words I want....had done this in an attempt to nick it. As you can see the steering lock held but the alloy gave way. What are my options and how much do you think it's going to cost to repair? I am considering just tie wrapping it up and carrying on regardless, as in cash terms the bike isn't worth a great deal. Any suggestions would be welcome. :groan:

Yep, that's the thing I want! It had me stumped for a minute as I thought I would have to replace the ignition barrel as well but then saw the screws in the bottom of the broken alloy. I take it I can just slip the old yoke off and slip the new yoke on without too much trouble? Or am I missing something? Thanks ma mate for posting as I couldn't find one. :thumb:

Yeh, it's a really easy job.
Just make sure the front ends off the ground but also the front wheel is supported to stop the forks leaning forwards and stressing the lower clamp once the upper is removed. Also wedge the wheel so it stays facing forwards (just makes it easier to work with).

Bars off, undo the fork clamps & stem nut, old top yoke off, swap the ignition barrel over, reassemble.

That's about the size of it I think. :thumb:

It's a shame it happened but it could have much worse. :)

Lovely! Cheers ma mate. And as you said it could have been a lot worse. I shall have to take a few spare tie wraps with me as I am off to Dusseldorf at the weekend and won't have time to source a new yoke before then! Thanks again buddy.

You'll be the top yoke expert on here when you've done the swap!  :thumb:

Right, job done. Only two problems. First was I seem to have lost my 1/2 ratchet, so I had to put it all together again to go buy another one. Sigh. Second is the fixings that hold the ignition to the yoke are those star security things. The ones with a pin in the middle. Fortunately I remembered buying a whole set of just that type of thing from Aldi years ago thinking " They might just come in handy one day". Happy days. Thanks again!
