Puncture Record???
« on: September 10, 2016, 13:42:42 »
Last  Tues morning,  got all the gear on pushed Veek off centre stand and discovered back tyre flat as a pancake. Inflated it and found nail just off centre of tread loosing air fairly slowly. Off to bike shop and as Battle Wing had done six thou and position of puncture, new Battle Wing tyre was fitted. Picked up bike at tea time, rode 3 miles home parked up in garage. Wed morning got all gear on pushed Veek of centre stand.Back tyre flat as a pancake  :angry-banghead: bloody great tack in centre of tread.  :icon_no: took wheel off and had it vulcanised. Hope it holds . Is three miles on a brand new tyre a record???

Other than those who drop it in the car park after a tyre change, then yes, 3 miles seems like a record.

Such bad luck, I've not had one in 26000 miles.

That's a bad day ... however, not me personally  but I can probably top that with a story about one of my customers .
Came in on a sat morning a couple of years ago on a CBR 600 for a pair of tyres , we fitted them , he paid and left . Within 5 mins he was back with not one but two punctures , front and back .
After wiping away his tears he decided he didn't want two tyres with punctures so asked for another pair. Because we felt sorry for this bloke we gave him a pretty big discount on his second pair , we fitted them , he paid and left .
About 5 hours later he returned with his bike in the back of an sos van , the bike was wheeled out of the van smashed up because he didn't listen to our advice on using new tyres.  :shrug:

We haven't seen this bloke since ... maybe he gave up riding .. :bawl:

Or his wife killed him...

I've only ever had 2 punctures, one on my old FZS600 Fazer,  fortunately was about to change the rear tyres as was pretty much worn out. Second on the current PR4 must have had about 2k miles on it. Hopefully I won't get another.

Don't drive parts of the road where cars do not. e.g. where there are road humps like two pillows. If you drive down the gully between these, they are not "swept" by other vehicles and so motorcycles will pick up any stray nails, screws, tacks etc. As ever the front wheel sets the nail up and rear wheel collects it.  Perhaps an unfashionable very low mudflap on the front guard would help.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can. Nothing travels faster than the speed of time.

Punctures, perhaps not, but tyres..........

This from November 2015:

Well, OK, not on the same vehicle but I've surprised myself with the need to be re-shod so many times.

New rear tyres early this year on the car;

A pair of tyres for the V-Strom after a blow out coming home from the Burgundy Tour;

A pair of wheels and tyres for my neglected trailor after a puncture;

Even in England this last few days I saw a fault in one of my two front car tyres so replaced them both;

And the last was a rear tyre for my push bike which was cracked and split after no use for the last few years.

That just about re-boots any thing that moves around here!  NINE in total!  :GRR:

Joe (rubber) Rocket.  :grin:
So how's it going so far then?

At this point, I usually sing the praises of Puncturesafe.

Since using it on all my bikes and scoots, I've never had a puncture (touches wood).

Thinking of installing it in the car which doesn't have a spare tyre...

Not had a puncture in 7 years, bikes or cars & I do over 30k miles a year (hmm, should I post this?? Tempting fate?)

I once got a double puncture (both front & back) on my Kwak 400 in the middle of the Clyde Tunnel in Glasgow in the '80s - was travelling through the tunnel at 50ish, flatbed transit up front suddenly loses about half a dozen 6ft boards all studded with nails. I didn't have a hope of missing them all and..pop pop. I rode (wobbled) the bike all the way out of the tunnel - stopping would be suicidal. Two new tyres required.
