Pillion comfort
« on: March 16, 2016, 10:33:27 »
Hi Folks,
I was wondering if anyone has any top tip for getting my pillion a bit more comfortable.
The wife has a bit of a bad back so won't come out for more than 1hr30 or so.
She has pants that fit and aren't putting pressure on anywhere, which has helped.
Put the top box on so she doesn't worry about going off the back.
We have intercom so she can chat.
Any other top tips. I wondered if the pillion pegs can be lowered to reduce the knee and hip angle.

Anyone got any top tips or just get her used to coming out?

Cheap Solution: Leave the missus at home and go solo.

Expensive Solution: Honda Armchair (Goldwing)

It is important where it starts becoming uncomfortable, knees or lower back or upper back. I don't think much can be done for lower back, apart from posture or wearing a back support belt or maybe softening the seat to reduce impact on the spine.

Some move the top box backwards, some have back rest pads on the top box,  yes you can find adjustable pegs.

My wife has bad knees. Hasn't stopped her though. Our answer is to stop every hour and have a 5-10 minute stretch. Have done two fortnight trips to France using that system.

My wife has painful knees and hips, not made any better by riding pillion. Painkillers are always in the top box.
She doesn't like the back rest on the top box, it pushes her too far forward (even with the box set further back) the back protector in her jacket is enough to cushion her.
Don't accelerate or more important brake too hard, then they don't have to use their legs to stop themselves sliding forward.
Having the intercom is a bonus, she will tell me she is going to drop her legs off the pegs for a stretch or asks me to slow down for a bit so she can stand on the pegs for a bit of adjustment. (These done in sensible/safe/ quiet areas).
11/2 hours seems to be our cut off time. 10 or 15 minutes is usually enough to refresh.
When touring we stop regularly, often before the 11/2 hours to have a break/look around/coffee, etc trying not to get to the point where you 'need' to stop. Once you get to that point that 'need' time gets shorter as you go on!
It's not as much fun on the pillion so listen to their requests opinions etc. They will differ to yours! (In fact that's usual isn't it?)
Most important, never frighten them!!! Cornering too fast or 'close' overtakes etc causes sharp pains in the riders kidneys!!!  :violence-smack:

Thanks blokes, may look at lowering the pegs. She is 5"11 so I think that would help and take pressure off her lower back a touch.
Her back problems come from to much time at a surgical table causing tight hamstrings.

Yep move the topbox plate back and it'll make quite a difference.

"Mr Chippy" finds the back of the Vstrom uncomfortable - slightly expensive solution but she's very happy on the back of my TEX - 4000 mls in 16 days was no problem :thumb:

Hola

I recommend riding for an hour and having a short break, 5 or 10 mins is fine. Your wife is likely to travel larger distances like this.

I moved the topbox back and fitted some MFW Vario footpegs which lower and move forward the pillion pegs. Not cheap but worth it and you can keep them for your next bike as you only need to change the actual mount for different bikes.

Anyone got any photo's of their modified base-plate for the top box, just to get some idea of how far it is possible to move it further back....
