Do the 650's vent the fuel tank at the cap?
« on: June 28, 2016, 10:15:50 »
I've noticed a bit of petrol wiff from the tank cap on my 2007 650.

Upon closer inspection the cap is not sitting level when closed - is it supposed to?
I've also noticed that I can push it in further (once closed & locked) but I guess that's normal as it'll be resting against its' seals and seems to have some sort spring seal type arrangement.

So, is it normal to have some petrol smell above the filler cap?

The cap has a one way flapper valve vent. It is designed to let air in but not out. How well it performs that job may vary a bit.

There is/should be a vent pipe under the tank. Has it become disconnected?

I don't know, the problem is the fumes from the cap. to be honest it's not that bad, it seems worse because I keep a thick blanket over her when not in use so when I pull the blanket off I get face full of fumes. When the bike is sat there normally there isn't an excessive petrol smell. I was just concerned that the cap might not be sealing 100%

The most usual cause of fumes is a dried out hose between the injectors. It dries out and shrinks which causes leaking when not used. With use it swells and seals again. http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php?topic=7728.0

The hose is the blue section pictured. If it's wet in thre, replace the hose and the hose clamps with high pressure fuel injection rated parts, not carburetor hose and jubilee clips.
