Help please front Mudguard bolt
« on: June 05, 2016, 19:56:45 »
Came to fix my mudguard extender today so started to take front bolt from mudguard but when I have tried to take the rear one out it just spins seems like there's a round washer that it goes into, but the whole bolt is just turning and I can't hold it so now can't remove the mudguard. Any ideas or tips please.

It's a poor attempt at a captive nut. A nut is welded to a square of flat steel. This sits in a square recess. The idea is, it won't spin. The reality - the steel square is undersized, the plastic is soft, it spins. You can often jam a screwdriver into the gap to stop it so you can wind the screw out. Every glee owner who's ever had the front guard off has found this abomination, others will be along shortly with their cunning work-rounds. "You are not alone. "

You're not alone...

I did this before reading a warning not to do it  :dl_smiley_banghead: In the end I managed to tighten it back up and just stick the extender on and used the 3 screws that came with it.

At Christmas just gone I decided to change the fork oil, so tackled these nuts once and for all. With the wheel out, I used some mole grips, screwdriver and long nosed pliers to keep hold of the captive nuts and managed to get them off. Was a bloody faff too and took ages. They've been replaced with a standar nylon lined nut which makes a huge difference.

This captive nut has convinced me Satan works in Suzuki's design department... (that and the beak on the Veek/Gleek  :stirpot:)

It's a big enough problem I posted a sticky warning on Stromtrooper. It seems to have become a bigger problem on the Glee than the Wee due to thread locker being added.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s
