New tyre- "Be careful"
«

Hi,
I've just had the front tyre changed and I got the "be careful on it" advice from the garage. So what is the official rule on new tyres and "being careful"? You buy lots of products that you don't do 70mph (or more) on and get endless bumf about safety but a tyre, you get a very unspecific "be careful". Anyone?

Just don't give it "full welly" for about 100 miles.
Some people follow the rules and some don't.
The tyres may have a release agent on the tread to get them out of the molds. I don't think it is as important a rule as it used to be.

Thanks. I went up the Cat and Fiddle yesterday and coming down had some controlled fun, that is probably after doing 60 or so miles on it, felt fine. Just seems strange that a tyre would be sold with a residue on it which compromises grip. At least fitter could have a solution which removes the residue. Never understood it...

I generally forget all about taking it easy after 5 minutes unless it's raining.

I'm with Frez, they recommend 100 miles but normally within a couple of miles that 'shine' had gone off the tyre and they are fine, the issues occur when it's raining or when you crank it right over quickly early in a ride.

I just go for a short first ride maybe 20 miles tops, and increse lean angle progressively through the ride, same with the brakes, also traction control off the Veek, first gear, weight forwards and give it the beans ....ahem

According to the tyre manufacturer michelin. They ditched the release agents a while ago. They use some on the tyre walls around the lettering but none on the tread part. I think it's just a case of scrubbing the tyre a bit to get rid of the smoothness. But I think mentally you need to do 100 mile I know I do.

That is interesting Captain, and must admit, having just had a new rear pilot 4 on the back, within 5 miles on dry roads had it to the edge in corners, expecting it to move about a bit but it was planted.
