How many of you run your bikes in as the dealer specifies ?

It's most important! I did, although the temptation to rev it freely is hard to resist but its a must! I started to feel the engine loosening off around 1500 miles. Gently does it!

Just take it easy, don't lug it uphill at low revs, and don't rev it too hard through the gears.

It's good to vary the revs, rather that stick to one speed, to the same avail, go easy on the brakes for a tank full of fuel to let them bed in.

Just ride it, avoiding extremes. Most engines are run flat out at the factory anyway ;)

So true. Where is the like button? This is the way things have been for many years now. I believe the break in procedure in the manual was written by lawyers to break in the rider because the machine doesn't need it. I just rode as appropriate to the traffic and mood from day one. I sold my '07 Wee with 77,000 miles on it and the second owner has it over 113,000 miles now. I haunt V-Strom forums and have only seen a few posts about early engine wear and all were due to owner error involving oil. Break in is a non issue nowadays.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

It's been a long time since I run a bike in bike in but I'd be concerned about how much data an ECU stores, max revs etc, could improper running in be used against you in a warranty claim?

The ECU does not store any such information. It doesn't feed an OBDII system. Even if it did, those values would be high from the factory dyno run. Also, the car ECUs that do record such information are limited in memory size. Old data is overridden by later data.
