3A Fuse blowing
« on: January 30, 2016, 12:54:55 »
Every time I connect something to the 12v socket the 3a fuse blows.

Just had some heated grips fitted by a dealer who said they connected them up to the auxiliary lights circuit. 30 seconds after turning them on, same fuse blows.

Any idea what the problem is? I'm thinking it's drawing more power than the 3a fuse can handle. Do they need rewiring?

If it isn't blowing immediately then that should rule out a short circuit and reverse polarity. It does sound like there is more current being drawn than the fuse can handle.

If the cable is big enough, maybe try a 5A fuse?

That circuit is designed to handle recharging a phone and/or Sat Nav. For heavier duty chores, get a fuse block from Bigpie.

You'd have thought a franchised Suzuki dealer would have known that circuit isn't up to powering grips. If I were fitting it I'd have wired it direct to the battery. Only got them to do it because it was in for a service anyway and I was short on time!

There is an electrical connector for the heated grips tucked behind the Near side front fairing panel to the side of the rad. If you have the Suzuki Spot lamps part of the kit is an ignition switched relay, mounted inside the fairing and a spare connector for attaching the grips. I fitted R&G Grips which are fused at 4A to this connector. Might be worth mentioning this to your service auto-electrician  :thumb:
