Starter switch / headlamp assembly
« on: January 20, 2016, 12:43:25 »
Thinking of changing it to an earlier model where I can switch the headlights off manually instead of it being on all the time.

On the older models (k2-k4) there never was a problem with the starter or headlamps but it seems that the newer ones where there is no headlight on/off switch, there are problems with starting and headlight failures due to corrosion or whatsoever.

Anyway, that's what I want to do so how easy is it to change them? Do I need to make any changes to the circuitry etc?

Wouldn't it be easier to fit a waterproof switch into the circuit, maybe the headlight feed into the starter switch?

Other than that fit a relay kit, maybe with a switch there?

Fitting headlight relays is an excellent idea. The starter switch headlight cutout plus the other weak link connectors will no longer be problems if they are feeding relays instead of headlights. The cutout switch was installed beginning in 2005 because the starter motor has more power available and the lack of induction spikes from the motor cutting off and off will lengthen headlamp life.

Is there a How To?

Those wanting that level of detail are probably best off getting a V-Strom specific kit. PM Bigpie for local access. If he doesn't have any, you can get the Eastern Beaver kit. http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Bike_Specific/VStrom/vstrom.html#h4dual
It is for any V-Strom except the Veek.

You unplug the stock female connectors from the headlights. Then plug the kit female connectors onto the headlights. Plug the kit male connector into one of the stock female connectors you just unplugged and tape over the other one. Run the red wire with ring connector to the battery positive and the black wire with ring connector to the battery negative. Use the cable ties to hang the relays from the fairing inner frame and to keep the wiring run neat.

If you get a kit Grumps, then it is just a case of .....
1) Plug either of the two existing headlight feeds directly on to the input side of the relays.
2) Plug the two relay kit outputs directly on to the two headlights.
3) Connect the relay kit power feeds to the battery.

Instead of diverting the full lamp power up through the bar switches, it just uses that route as a low power feed to the relay and switches power direct from the battery to the lights.

My pennyworth

I have fitted a switch to the dip beam circuit, picked up from the large connector in the left hand fairing, up to a switch and back gain, just to interrupt the circuit.
Due to GW's warning about running with no headlights on could cause damage, I now just turn the lights on after I have started the engine.
This means no heavy headlight voltage via the starting system.

This works for me, but heed GW's warnings as they seem quite valid.
