Glee Front brake caliper rebuild kit
« on: December 21, 2015, 19:55:58 »
The time has come to rebuild my front calipers. 3 scottish winters and 16500 miles has taken its toll.

Any suggestions as to the best place to get a front caliper rebuild kit (seals and pistons)?

Cheers
Ben

I got my replacement pistons and seals via local bike shop (who ordered from Fowlers parts online but I saved postage).

All the dealerships were telling me the pistons were on backorder with Suzuki, but the local shop said that was odd as they all order from Fowlers.

Whenever I have rebuilt calipers, the pistons have been good enough to reuse (I do pump them into working position then very lightly coat the exposed part with waxoil :) )
Although not strictly correct, I reuse the seals, smearing red rubber grease into the cleaned groove - I'm sure it helps reduce future corrosion.

Not if you scratch the piston trying to remove the bloody thing which is jammed by a popped seal...  :dl_smiley_banghead:

I used red rubber grease like that after reading it on here  :thumb:

Used to have to strip the callipers on the wee every 4-6 months when the seals had popped.

I then striped them. Used Suzuki seals, original pisons and red rubber grease.
I got the dremel out with a nylon brush and cleaned the seal recesses with old brake fluid. Then a liberal coating or grease in the recesses and seals. Re-assembled, bled and all was good.

Every 6 months there after I would pop the calipers off the mounts and clean the exposed pistons and outer bit of dust seal with old brake fluid and a toothbrush and didn't have issues for the last three years and 40k miles of it's life.

Thanks for the pointers - much appreciated. Might give them a good clean in the daylight (it was pitch black when I was doing it last night) and see if I can keep them moving, maybe until the Spring when the salt is off the roads.

The main thing is to ensure the seal recesses are cleaned down to bare metal, if this isn't done properly the pistons will still bind
