Any ideas about the colour scheme history? I'm wondering when was the last year navy blue (the best ever colour scheme on a v-strom)
was discontinued and replaced by a trollopy red light districty lighter blue (uk yuk yuk) one

Hmm, have seen that, and it does say YC2 (candy blue was up to 2005 (K5)
My bike is registered 2007, but is a 2006 MY K6, but is paint code Yc2. all very confusing

This is what I found

It seems the decent blue colour was phased out after 2005. Nothing in 2006 and rubbish blue in 2007

Seeing as you have a 2002 bike, you have the silver frame too. Which is much more important.
