ABS ECU errors
« on: May 19, 2015, 16:11:35 »
so bit the bullet and replace the severed rear ABS sensor, I had presumed that was the only issue but still I've got the warning light up, is there a separate dealer mode for the ABS system does anyone know how to read the codes?

Wee or Glee?

On the Wee, there's the ABS diag plug under the left hand panel under the seat. You can just about reach it from the top with the seat off if you sacrifice some skin to the maintenance gods.

From memory, there's only two pins. Short them out, and the ABS light will flash the error codes for you (until you start moving). The manual lists the flashes and matching errors.

Vee = old style 1000cc bike
Wee = old style 650cc bike
Glee = new style 650cc bike, if your bike is registered on or after a 61 reg, it's probably a Glee.

This is a Glee:

I would ask your Suzuki dealer to look at this ABS failure as a warranty claim (even though it over 24months)

Have they had many others go at this age?  I think its a Bosch made unit- so they may assist.

The part should last at least 7 years, as this is the design life of most bikes and cars...anything after that is a bonus.

If you've changed the brake fluid at 2 years, it might make it easier to convince them- Let us know how you do.

OR buy this one while you sort it - £220 s/hand (AL1-AL5)

Hmm... if it were me, I'd pull it apart and unstick the pump... but I've not done it before so can't offer any real guidance I'm afraid.

Suzuki says there are no user serviceable parts in the hydraulic unit. If it's already broken though.......

Suzuki say that a lot :)

There's not a huge amount inside them. If the motor is the culprit, it's likely to be one of the brushes. If the electrics are dead, they'll likely stay dead though, although there is some discussion regarding some BMW and volvo abs units where some connections have failed and been successfully repaired.

Post pics!! :)

I would be very surprised for motor brushes to be the issue. Brushes normally fail by being worn down and ABS pump motors get very little use.

Yeah, but they're designed for infrequent use too. Not exactly light loading either! The one's I've seen have had softened springs (I presume from sudden high current/temperature) which have let the brushes back off a bit, but you're right, they shouldn't have problems in intended use, so there may have been deeper causes.

A short circuit or other overload can take the temper out of brush springs and cause the brushes to float instead of contact, but I've not heard of any such case there before.

Spoke to BBA Remain they referb auto abs units, there's some valve in abs pumps which a common fault apparently not specific to this pump just generally, they did say that running a test cycle might be an issue as they would probably not have the software to connect to the ecu & run diags but could inspect the mechanicals
