Sizing dog bones
« on: April 11, 2015, 13:18:09 »
Ordered up a 30mm lowering kit for DL650 - having fitted these there appears to be no or very little  discernible difference in height.
My question is the dog legs that were supplied had hole centres around 5mm longer than the ones coming off - does anyone know what the difference should be to produce the drop or has anyone got the original hole centre size of original doglegs. My concern is that the bike already had lowered dog legs and I am a shorter arse than I thought

The standard ones are 140mm pitch, so what do you have?

Thanks martin

The originals are 140mm pitch between centres so appear to be original
The ones now fitted are 145mm pitch but I cannot really see any difference either from riding position or from the stance of the bike and certainly not a 30mm drop.

There is about a 2.8:1 ratio between difference in seat height and difference in dog bone length. You have about a 14mm drop. 28mm is the maximum before the tyre can contact the mudguard.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Thanks Greywolf that's the formula is was looking for - since I will always ride solo and never with fully loaded panniers I figured the 30mm drop should have been safe enough ? but for some reason theses one are only giving me just above 1/2" when advertised at 30mm
Ah well back to the drawing board

BTW anyone doing this the job it is simple took me all of 10 mins on my own ( with centrestand )

If you lower the rear of the bike by 30mm it does not lower the seat by 30mm. if you are sitting halfway down the length of the bike you will only get half of the lowering - 15mm = 5/8".
You will need to lower the front as well.
