mirror adjustment

I have an 02 1000. How do you tighten the mirrors to stop them moving at speed?
Apologies if a stupid question but have tried tightening by removing plastic top at stem top and trying to get a socket in but no joy.
Any help gratefully accepted

Use an open end spanner on the nut at the base.
