Brake Caliper Bolt trouble
« on: March 20, 2015, 21:30:10 »
My rear brake caliper bolt has decided to go all cheesy, and won't come off . What a pain in the Donkey. Anyone in the Kilmarnock area have a good way of removing the 14 mm bolt?  Would be grateful If someone could tell me where I can get a replacement.  :old:

Have you not greased your bolts ? .... first thing I done was to take the calipers off and do the pads and bolts.

Makes life easier .... going to do the engine bolts soon as they are a bit rusty

I'd order a new bolt from somewhere like  http://www.robinsonsfoundry.co.uk/  then set about removing the bolt.
Can't picture it in my head but is there access to get mole grips to it ? Or drill it and use a

I have a set of these that work well

Or maybe the cheapest way is to get a sharp cold chisel and tap it round to unscrew it.

Greased my bolts app two years ago, hardly use the rear brake. A combination of brute force and incorrectly fitting socket..... Result, round bolt head.  :ty:

Drilling it out with an extractor is one way.

Saw a groove across the bolt head, then put a cold chisel/screwdriver in the groove and tap it round.

Heat up the bolt head, with a small blow torch.

Get hold of 'Plus gas' - this stuff really helps sticky threads.

These are tips and tricks I used to get caliper bolts off a BMW r100r that had stood out for some years.

Have you tried a gator socket?
A socket with a lot of pins in it which are spring loaded, can grip rounded bolts.
Life is short - You have to enjoy it on a Wee-Strom!
