glee front sprocket removal
« on: November 02, 2014, 11:54:57 »
I'm attempting my first sprocket and chain replacement on my glee but I can't seem to o get the nut holding the front sprocket off. I think I've bent off the tab washer holding the nut in place but it was pretty mangled on one side to begin with. Anyone know how to get this blasted nut off?

This one is always tough, it takes something like 140nm of torque when you tighten it. Most folk I know get an electric impact driver to do this. It's hard work even with a breaker bar.

Don't have it in gear whichever way you do it, neutral with a block of wood in the spokes resting on the swingarm. :thumb:

As above. I didn't have anywhere near as much trouble as I was expecting on my wee. Crack the nut before breaking the chain. Block of wood through wheel in to the swing arms and sat on bike with rear brake on, used a long bar and just pressed.

When putting the nut back on, only use 115Nm which is the spec for the same nut on the more powerful Vee that doesn't have a lockwasher. A pneumatic or electric impact gun is a handy tool for removal. Make sure to take the speedo sensor piece off first.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

I think the root of my problem may be the tab washer. One side looks like it has been squashed rather then bent over. Any idea how to open it out?

I managed to get the rear sprocket and chain changed as the chain was in a pretty sorry state and the bike is my only means of getting to work. Plan to get the front done asap.

Just try to flatten it with a cold chisel and a punch.
